A Reuters poll last week found China’s GDP growth was forecast to speed up to 4.0% in the first quarter from a year earlier, versus 2.9% in the previous three months, according to the median forecast of 70 economists.

Adding to the mix of resilient U.S. economic data was a strong run of first-quarter 2023 earnings from JPMorgan Chase & Co, Citigroup Inc and Wells Fargo & Co, brushing off concerns about a banking crisis that unfolded in March.

Meanwhile, oil exports from northern Iraq to the Turkish port of Ceyhan remain at a standstill almost three weeks after an arbitration case ruled Ankara owed Baghdad compensation for unauthorised exports.

Gold prices inched lower on Monday, as a firmer U.S. dollar and prospects of one more rate hike by the Federal Reserve after last week’s mixed economic data dented the metal’s appeal.
